Not all crusts come out good in pies, sometimes they just quickly fall off. I've seen that happen many times on TV. It's happened to me several times, too. My first pieing in November of 1996, and July 17, 1997. The crusts just either fell off or didn't stick enouch to begin with in both of these pieings.

On another note, if you are going to post to these boards again, I suggest you register.

Ideally, crusts should shatter on impact -- which is why the baked ones work best. The graham cracker kind are certainly easier to deal with, but they can fall off easily. In general, I prefer pies with crusts because that means less chance of the pie tin remaining on once the pie is thrown or smashed.

This could be a really great topic, so I'm moving to the main discussion board where this topic belongs in the first place.

On the topic of crusts, I never really gave it much thought about it shattering on impact as I like to see as much of it stick as possible.

Aside from the advantage of preventing the tin from staying on the face, crusts are also good to ensure everything in the tin comes out. Without crusts a lot of extra whipped cream actually stays in the pie tins, I've seen it many times. When the crust come out, so does all the contents between the crust and your face resulting in more face coverage. :)

I've only used th graham cracker crusts because they're eay to obtain, but they definitely help to make sure that the filling releases from the tin.

Gramcracker is probably one of the best out there I'd say. It's lighter than the baked pie shells you buy frozen. Gramcracker breaks into smaller pieces and sticks better.

Ever see the Threes Company pie fight? Those were gramcracker crusts they used, I can tell. I see those used on TV a lot.

I like pie crusts for whipped cream kind of pies.
Pies with crusts will stick better when smashed or smeared around the face! ;)

My opinion is sometimes both. Sometimes I like just seeing a pie without the crust because (especially w/ kids on STL) you can see their laughing faces. With crust if it doesn't shatter and it's just a full pie I don't see their reaction of much. I think some of you might see that better than me, but it's just my opinion. If you the crust shatters enough or even falls off leaving little bits and pieces I like them.

I like it when crusts stick for maybe 1 or 2 seconds and then fall off. This sort of adds a preverbial "double whammy" in the funny catagory.

crusts are good if they break into pieces while remaining stuck on the face. that way you get both the cream and the crust effect.

Figured I'd bump this thread to talk a bit more about crusts.

I've noticed sometimes on TV they use pies with crusts and no tins. Soupy Sales did it all the time. Also Barbara Mandrell's "Dial A Pie" segment.
Most recently, I noticed the pies from Captain & Tennille "Masterjoke Theatre" were just cream and crust with no tin as well. You can see the little lines along the edge of the crust where it must have baked inside a pie tin. But the C&T pies seem smaller than usual especially those used in the fight with the sisters and Rich little etc. The crust is sturdy enough to hold in your hand without breaking (even hand off from one person to another) but soft enough to bust apart on impact.

Also the SOUND of a hit is different with a tin vs without.
The tin often creates a sharp "bang" or "clank" especially when a pie is thrown, but a pie made of just cream and crust makes more of a nice full-bodied splat - more of a "plop" with a gooey low-end range to it.

I've always felt the sound of pies is equally as important as the look. Even when excess pie falls on the floor - if there's plastic there it makes a sharp sound where you can tell plastic is there, even if you don't see it. But on a bare floor, especially smooth wood or linoleum, the plopping often has a nice ambience to it.

Went off the crust topic there a bit, but just a few observations. Keep pieing everyone! :D ;D :D

I think then tin plus the crust is best - get hit, let the tin stay on the face a little, take it off, and then you still have a crust on you and can take that off slowly. In one skit I did, I was sitting in a chair as a fussy customer, and the stooge waiter tripped and fell into me carrying the pie, unloadng it in my face. He apologized, took the tin off, then parts of the crust so my eyes were visible and he dumped the crust on my head. I think when the pie gets thrown, you end up losing the crust from the tin.

Sometimes crust is a good thing. Especially when it starts falling off. I have a DVD at home on the "Three Stooges." In an interview, one of their directors discussed the different types of ingredients they used in their pies. They said that real pies would not withstand throwing and the scenes were shot at close range. This would make sense. Iwas at a pie throw about 16 years ago where they put whipped cream on sponge. To me, it just didn't have the same effect as a pie with or without crust. :)
