Anyone feeling a bit in a critiquing mood? How about we open up a large topic of reviewing pie in the face scenes? I hope to build a pie in the face review section on my site, and in order to do that I need the material.
First we need to figure out a pie scale. Should we use stars like zero or one to five stars? Or should we use a scale of zero to ten with ten being the best?
If I use your pie review on the site I'd love to credit you as to who wrote it, so maybe we can work that out, too.
The reason this isn't posted in Suggestions and Ideas is because this is mainly meant to be a big pie reviews discussion, so hence this being in the main pie discussions board.
Feel free to talk about and rate your favorite pie scenes.

To get the ball rolling, I'll mention a few that may be familiar to pie fans:
1. In "Singing in the Rain", Debbie Reynolds hurls a huge cake at Gene Kelly, who ducks and instead it hits Jean Hagen (I think that is her name -- I'm not certain). It was as near to a perfect pieing as you can get: buildup, execution, coverage, and above all, reaction -- she gave this muffled scream that was absolutely hilarious.
2. One of the "I Love Lucy" episodes, "Lucy Goes to the Ballet" features a pieing of both Lucy and Ricky. The one of Lucy is pretty good, but the one of Ricky is fantastic -- it comes after this great sequence with Lucy dressed up as a burlesque clown wreaking havoc on a ballet act, and her pieing of Ricky is a great capper to the scene.
3. As mentioned in the "Stooges" thread, some of the pies thrown in "Spook Louder" were the best pie throws of the entire canon.
These examples are of individual pie throws. I haven't mentioned the great pie fights yet -- maybe next posting!

| 5 stars should be enough, like movie ratings: excellent, very good, good, fair, and poor. I think it would be better to start with 1( fair); zero would mean the pie missing the target--essentially a non-pieing. As long as the pie hits the target, it deserves a 1.

Now kids, let's all just have fun! |

I think the more I think about it now, the more I want to use a scale of 1 - 10. There's a wider range of numbers to choose from and I think we need that for more precision with all the different pie hits that are out there. Also, Gregg already used the stars on pie reviews on his site, Famous Pied Faces List. I'd rather we go differently than other sites so that it's not like we're copying anything.
So, I think I'll say we'll go for the 1 - 10 scale rating.

Monte Carlo or Bust must be one of the greatest pie fights of all time, featuring the dear Natalie Wood getting mercilessly pied. Also Battle Of The Century, with Laurel and Hardy where they used an entire days production at a local bakery for the films 'props'.
It's also 46 years ago today as well, since we lost Oliver Hardy (7th August 1957). There was also a film, I think it was the Shaggy DA with a pie fight in it, it was with the actor Dean Jones who was in the Herbie films.
Its a thing we never seem to see much on British television nowadays is slapstick, but over in the US there seems to be loads of it.

I said in an earlier post that Natalie Wood was mercilessly pied in a great pie fight scene in the film Monte Carlo or Bust. The film I actually meant to mention was The Great Race. Both feature vintage cars racing, and I got them mixed up.
Sorry about that if someone has been looking for it.
I'm off to add to my collection of pied people today, hope to get a few, as well as get done myself, which will be a certainty.

I've heard about this pie in the face on this show, on Gregg's Famous Pied Faces List site, but don't know any details about it what so ever. What happened that Levar Berton got pied? Why and how did he get pied? How good was the pieing and how good was the pie itself? I'd love to know some details about it.

It has someting to do with the topic of the show being clowns and clowning around. At the end of the show, he gets into a pie fight.

Too bad it's hard to convince people that playing with pies is FUN! |

The theme of the Reading Rainbow episode was comedy, and the running story with Levar was that a clown came to his house to give him a "comedy makeover" (they do this all in the backyard). At the very end of the show, when Levar had the costume right and all the makeup right, the clown tells him that all he needs now is a routine. The clown takes a pie and hands Levar one too, which he holds infront of him. The clown says "okay, you stand here, and I'll stand over there". When he says "over there" he gestures really big, which pushes Levar's arms up and the pie into his own face (does that sentence even make sense? oh well, you get what I'm saying). The clown apologizes and gets him another pie, and of course it happens again. The clown walks out of camera range as Levar does the "see you next time" signoff, and Levar turns to look at him just as he's throwing another pie (yes, through mid-air, with great aim) that gets Levar perfectly. Then they just end up having a pie fight as the credits rolled. Levar seemed to have fun with it; laughing a lot, and getting hit a lot (his aim was terrible).
Pies seemed to be just whipped cream (he was licking it off his lips, so it couldn't have been shaving cream). Not spectacular pies; no crust, not thick cream, but it didn't really matter. It was a really cute scene; nicely done.
And no, I don't have a photographic memory. Thank goodness for VCRs (nope, not dubbing... sorry).
