Pie Reviews #1: Threes Company Pie Scene
« Thread Started on Aug 12, 2003, 10:26am »

Here's the first of many reviews I'd like to start going on a regular basis. After enough reviews have been posted I hope to collect them and put them on a section on the website crediting each person who wrote each review. Use my format here as an example, mentioning your score within your post, then putting score again in bold at the bottom after the message.

Now here's the main question:

On a scale of 1 - 10, 1 being poor and 10 being best, how would you rate the Threes Company pie scene?

I personally would rate it at a 7.5 or an 8, I'm kind of undecided. It was a great pie scene and good plot leading up to it. There was a good reason to have all those pies there as it was a bake off, unlike some other shows with a pie fight when there were dozens of pies around for no reason.

As always, there were a few disappointments like Janet only getting pied on half her face and Chrissy not getting hit with more pies other than her self pie. Then the scene ends with many more pies left that were never thrown. Now, it is to my understanding that there was an out take of this scene where they threw the rest of the pies at each other and I know some people out there have it available on their clip tapes, but I have never seen it.

Those were only a few minor downsides, I think the greatness and quality of the pie fight itself along with the plot outweighs the disappointments. The pies were great, the whipped cream and chocolate filling covered great along with the gramcracker crust. The reactions were genuine and classic, very much like the older classic pie scenes like Laurel and Hardy, Three Stooges, etc.. Very well done. It wasn't too short, but could have been a little longer. However, among pie fans there probably isn't really a pie scene that isn't long enough. ;)

The first pieing of the judge was a great lead in, his reaction was really funny as Travers was freaking out and trying to apologize. Ending with Jack's double pie in the face from each side (a.k.a. "pie sandwich") from the Ropers was absolutely awesome. It's too bad they kept that tag out of syndication for over twenty years, but it's great they brought it back for the Nick at Nite showings. How the rest all started and ended was truly funny and great entertainment. Wish more sitcoms of today had scenes like this.

Overall, it's one of my personal favorites. Not THE favorite, but ONE of my favorites. Final thoughts, I'll give it an 8 out of 10. Well done.

So, I'd like to see everyone else's review, for those who have seen it. Write out your review and use the 1 - 10 scale. This is only the first and there will be more reviews to follow.

Score: 8 out of 10

P.S., This pie scene comes on tonight (Aug. 12) as Daveanderson's post says, Threes company pie fight!

This was on the other day, as mentioned here. It's always worth seeing. The highlights for me are the multi-pieing of Travers, and Jack getting the pie sandwich at the end. They get it the best (or worst) out of everyone involved. Even though Janet's pieing wasn't that good as far as coverage, what did get her remained on her face and looked great when she turns tthe pied side toward the camera.

Overall, I'd give it 7. If more of the cast were given more than one pie, it would be higher, although most of the pie hits were good. As far as individual pieings, I'd give Travers an 8 because of the many pies he was pelted with. Jack, who I think recieved the best pieing, definitely gets a 10. He really got creamed by the Ropers. The pies covered his whole face and stuck well. I would have loved it if the chef, Hoffmeyer, got more then one pie. In fact, if I had written it, I would have had Jack, Travers, and Hoffmeyer in a three way pie fight.

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I give it ten happy grins.
This is indeed the best pie-in-the-face scene of that "disco" era.
For those who never saw it,
from the moment the plot is introduced that there's a pie bake-off, you just know a fight is coming. The pies are indeed all real and it's just a very very very classic scene. From Mr. Hoffmeyer's blustery first hit, to the barrage of pies thrust upon Travers whilst Mrs. Roper is clapping and laughing and Jack is biting his knuckles.
Then the Ropers give it to Jack and the credits roll.

But, alas, my friends, there's more, as I'm sure most of you already know...

Cameras kept rolling when the show ended and more pies were tossed around between John, Suzanne and Joyce including one to the seat of Suzanne's skirt.
You can see the cameramen pulling forward and back to get good shots as the audience roars with each "sneak attack".
Pie clip bootleggers have copied copied copied copied this "bonus footage" so many times, but it's out there...

somewhere.

ABC must still have it in a vault.

CLASSIC pie stuff!

I FINALLY caught the pie fight from the old Xena series yesterday. Since almost everyone had put it down I had lowered expections but ,Hey, I thought it had a lot going for it. A 30 member, well organized pie fight throwing a gazillion pies with real crusts doesn't come around everyday ya know. Plus, they payed homage to every pie in the face cliche in the last 98 year history of pie throwing !

I would rate this a 10, because I just taped it off TV Land the other night and still laugh my tail off! In fact, I think it's funnier now than when I first saw it.

Here's a pie-by-pie breakdown and what I think works well comically:

1. First pie is an "accidental" pie to Mr. Hoffmeier (Leon Askin), the judge and bakery owner, when Jack tries to take the Hoffmeier's Bakery pie (substituted for Jack's pie, which Chrissy ate) and the tech school dean, Mr. Travers (William Pierson, a most coincidental spelling BTW) tries to keep it in to win yet another trophy for the school. The pie slips out of Jack's hands and the force of the dean's pull causes the pie to fly over his shoulder into Hoffmeier's face.

This is one of the funniest sequences in the set. Here we have Dean Travers apologetically trying to explain it was an accident and wipe the pie from the judge's face, and we have Hoffmeier with his bulldog jaws (a la Winston Churchill) flapping wildly as he screams something barely intelligible like "Get your hands off me!" and spitting pie all over the place, including onto Travers' face. Very funny.

At this point, Hoffmeier screams, "Accident! I'll show you accident!" as he picks up a pie. Meanwhile...

2. Dean Travers moves while Hoffmeier is looking down to make sure he grabs the pie. He's so angry he comes up throwing where Travers was. Unfortunately for Stanley Roper, Stanley is now there. Stanley (Norman Fell) gives one of his signature bug-eye looks that became a staple for the pre-Don Knotts (Farley) era. Through the pie, it's even better. Meanwhile, Helen (the late Audra Lindley) is howling, "Stanley! You look so ridiculous!" So we know what's coming next...

Hoffmeier, unsatisfied that he did not connect with Travers' face, tries again.

3. Again, Travers moves, and Hoffmeier in his anger just pushes straight forward -- straight to where Helen Roper has her head straight back, laughing at the top of her lungs. SPLAT! and her head snaps forward, just as you would imagine her to do.

I might note here that as I thought about writing this review, I realized how superbly it was written in that everyone pretty much reacted the way you would expect his or her character to react, which is why I give this a perfect 10.
