We actually had this question on the previous forum, but it can't hurt to do a recap, especially for the newcomers. A couple of pointers: pies bought from a bakery tend to be expensive and risky. Bear in mind that bakers put lots of stabilizers in them, which means they don't splatter very well and can be very heavy.

Lots of people use whipped cream. It works well, except that it can be troublesome to make in large quantities and it does have a tendency to melt. There is a variety called manufacturer's cream, which maintains its shape at room temperature for several hours. It's difficult to get, though. Also, using some sugar while whipping makes the cream a bit more solid.

Cool Whip by itelf melts quickly; however, if you mix it with sour cream or yogurt (it sounds weird, I know), it also maintains its shape for several hours. It does thicken, so that it may be necessary to dilute it.

Aerosol whipped cream is worse than useless; it melts off in a microsecond, leaving a disagreeable film on the skin that is very difficult to wash out.

Shaving cream doesn't have the "feel" of whipped cream, but it can be fun. Use the sensitive skin variety, which doesn't sting the eyes. Avoid menthol and aloe varieties like the plague; they're hell on both the eyes and the skin. You can give shaving cream a "creamier" texture by mixing it with pancake batter. Start with a quantity of batter and stir in enough shaving cream so that the mixture is white instead of light brown.

For crusts, you can use graham cracker (easily obtainable in supermarkets), which comes ready-made in the pie tin, or frozen crusts, which must be thawed and baked -- but these make for better throwing and are well worth the extra effort. One advantage about the baked crusts is that you can slide the pie out of the tin before throwing -- which makes for a better impact and is less risky for the target (no danger of getting cuts from the pie tin edge).

Just like Jagman said, this has been mentioned on the old board. I'll provide the links to the old threads in case anyone is interested. Please don't post any replies there, if there is something you'd like to reply to, post it here and quote the original post or provide a link to the original post.

But you're right - a cream pie is a cream pie.

You know, I've heard of this stuff used for pies several times. I've always wanted to try it. That stuff is really sticky and I'm sure it would bond to the face well.

How do you make the Fluff in with the pie? Do you put it in a crust or with filling or what? I don't know how well it would work out, but I always thought of putting a thin layer of whipped cream (real whipping cream that I like to make) on the bottom of the crust if no filling is used. If filling is used maybe or maybe not a thin to moderate layer of that, I'm thinking chocolate for some reason. Then a thick layer of the Fluff with a toping of whipping cream. That's probably how I would make it. Of course, there is no real way to know how well it would work without some testing. ;D

Maybe one of these days I'll make a few variations and pie myself on camera like I did four years ago.

So anyway, what are your procedures for making the Fluff pies, Dave?

I just used a jar of fluff in a ready-made graham cracker crust. It's VERY heavy, solid, and extremely sticky. If you use it, make sure that you slowly push the pie onto your face and let it ooze. Don't try for a quick splat or you could hurt yourself. The crust helps the filling come out of the tin and onto your face. Warning, I've actually had my eyes stuck closed for a bit after the initial hit :) I've tried other messes with it but if you do them first, the fluff doesn't stick as well. Clean up is fairly easy with a hot shower. Let me know if you try it -- I'd like to hear about your experience. Once the members' gallery is up, I'll model a couple of fluff pies for you to see.

Wow, sounds great. I'll have to keep some of those things in mind in case I do it.

Do you have any pictures on hand even now of any pieings of yours? If so email them to me as I'd love to see them. I'd like to add them to the galleries, too.

I totally agree with Kelly. I've been pied around 20 times and at least a dozen of them were chocolate cream. There's nothing like being pied with your favorite flavor!

You know what? You're right, they have.

A number of years ago, before my internet days, I used to frequent the humor section in my local library looking for pie in the face action. I read in a book about the Three Stooges (wish I took the book home and typed out this chapter) all about the pie fights they had. They touched on what contents they used for the pies and how they did rehearsals and had to clean up for a final shoot etc......

A few things I remember about what they said of the contents of the pies were quite interesting. They used a variety of different stuff to ensure stickage. I believe they said they used whipped cream a little bit, but not too much. Custard they said was a no no because it didn't stick at all, I think they said that unless that was from another book about classic comedy.

Some of the things mentioned were ketchup, pumpkin, syrup (I think), molasses, a few other things I forget, and marshmallow. I don't know how they used marshmallow, but I'm sure they melted it down and mixed it with whipped cream or something. But, that makes a whole lot of sense. Some of their pies were so thick it drove me crazy trying to figure out how they got their whipped cream that thick. In the Sweet Pie and Pie short this black haired young lady got pied by the senator or something, great closeup shot, too. The whole pie and crust stuck like glue, she had to scrape off the cream (or whatever it was) by the handfuls. It's obviously not whipped cream because I've tried whipping up whipping cream really thick and it didn't work. That's why in some of my messages where I talk about whipping cream I'm always saying don't whip it too much to make it thicker. Sure, it gets thicker all right, but the thicker whipped cream gets the less stickier it is. I know this from experience and now I know where and when to stop whipping when I'm whipping the whipping cream. LOL! Try saying that ten time fast, huh? ;)

Anyway, I just wanted to touch on that. I really should look for that book again, type out the story, and post it. It was a keeper and I didn't keep it.

(Modified to correct a typo)

I've found that Pet-Ritz cream pies (available at most grocery stores for around $2), fortified with a layer of Cool Whip work beautifully. Chocolate is best, although other flavors are fine too.

Love getting pied with LOTS of pies! The more, the messier, the better. Like to pie others as well.

Yea, I am fortunate to live in an area that still sells Pet-Ritz pies, and they're about two bucks. They aren't good for eating but they sure are good for wearing!

I like the chocolate cream and the coconut cream the best, but they also have some that are orange-flavored and a banana-berry mix.
